Chapter Two, Unicorn Dreams

"The Unicorns were the most recognizable magic the fairies possessed, and they sent them to those worlds where belief in the magic was in danger of failing altogether. After all there has to be some belief in magic - however small - for any world to survive".
(Terry Brooks, The Black Unicorn)

The Return of Hope

Michael floats in the abyss, drifting, dreaming, only dimly aware of his failure to retrieve the ORB of Mortraine.

"Michael," the voice comes to him out of the darkness, interrupting his sleep. "Michael"  His dreams are now gone, shattered to the winds by this whispery soft voice. "Who are you?" he asks.

Out of the darkness her face appears....beautiful, ethereal, she is not human. The magic of her face lights up the Abyss and brings with it a warmth he had almost forgotten. He finds himself willingly drowning in the depths of her eyes, finding within them, a deep peace.

"Michael, you must return to us. You must awaken and return to Mortraine. You were not powerful enough to gain the Orb of Mortraine because you did not believe enough in the magic. It is there for you Michael. I am here for you. There are others as well, who will work beside you to restore the balance of Mortraine. You are not alone." With that, she showed him an ancient manuscript, bearing the names of all the heroes of ages past. His pride at seeing his own name listed among so many great men and women turned to horror as the names after his slowly faded before his eyes. "What is happening?" he moans.

"Your presence in the Abyss is changing the future of Mortraine. I have been sent to offer you hope, to show you that the magic is not dead. The others are on the way, Michael. Prepare yourself for them, they need your guidance but you must believe in the magic to escape the Abyss. You must believe in ME, Michael."

As he looks at her beauty and the hope she represents, he feels his despair melting away.  A renewal of hope fills his soul and mind, filling his heart with a blinding light. As he shouts with delight and triumph, light and sound returns to the Abyss.

"I believe!"

Across the land, others are dreaming of unicorns. When they awaken in the morning, they feel refreshed, full of hope. There are a few who also waken with the sudden knowledge that they must travel that day, for Michael and magic await them.

Details

*Complete Repaint, sealed with applied lashes (glittered): She was given round eyes to give a more realistic equine appearance. Her bushy brows arch up to reflect both her unicorn and fairy heritage.

*Original design costume, non-removable, contains intricate hand woven free form beadwork in a freeform style of crochet that my grandmother taught me as a young girl. (She could do some amazing things with thread and a crochet hook. I'm very thankful she took the time to teach me so many wonderful techniques!)  Many hours were spent stringing all those beads onto a spool of silver sewing thread before being worked up into her costume using this freeform crochet technique.

*Floor length Tail and hair tufts at wrists and heels have been inserted within her vinyl. Holes were drilled into her wrists, heels and back to insert her hair tufts and tail. Every effort was made to give her as many characteristics of a unicorn that I found in my research. I did however, leave off the beard as she was a female. Her tail is not just a fall of hair but many strands of hair, individually sewn onto a fabric cone base to imitate a real horse tail. It was then inserted into her back. A big thank you to Bill Jones, a wonderful generous doll artist and winner of many awards,  for his technical help.

*CLEAR resin cast hooves and horn, original design made in clay, then a mold was made and cast in clear resin by the artist specifically for this doll.

*Fairy ears: My research led me to believe that Unicorns are originated from fairies, thus I felt that the fairy ears would reflect not only the pointed ears of the unicorn, but as reference to her fairy origins.
