Chapter
Three, Fairy Intrigue
Story by Jennifer Kakesh
Gaylana’s essence drifted back
towards her body at lightning speed. As the transparent form engulfed the
corporal one, her gray eyes, now dark with unexpected knowledge, slowly opened.
Sensing the presence of the Unicorn in the world again, she had immediately
grown disturbed and sent her mind in search of it. Discovering it in the Abyss
with Michael, she had shielded her presence from them, both to protect herself
from discovery and from the madness that awaits those who enter the Abyss
unprotected.
Though not of royal blood, Gaylana
was the oldest Fairy known, old even in the time of Larthtor and Igahnia’s
grandparents. She did not rule both by choice and bloodline, but her wisdom and
guidance were sought in matters of importance. What she had learned in the Abyss
raised many serious questions in her mind.
The Fairy had
sensed the rising tension between the humans and Draconians, but had remained
neutral, even through the recent war between Mendalia and Michael. Bendal’s
rule had benefited the Fairies, allowing them to live in quiet and peace. The
Draconians had powerful magic and wielded the Orb well, aiding the fairies own
use of magic. The humans, on the other hand, lived a decent life, but certainly
not as grand as the Draconian. The fairy folk did not look on that as a bad
thing though humans could be as unpredictable as the Draconian. Whoever won, the
life of Fairy would not have changed.
The Unicorn’s presence in the world changed things for the
Fairies. It was Gaylana who controlled the Unicorn’s presence in the world,
yet she had not called it this time. The implications of that weighed heavily on
the world of Fairy. Only the Unicorn could have returned Michael from the Abyss
and only a powerful Fairy could have called the Unicorn and sent it into the
Abyss. What politics were abrew in Fairy to provoke such an act?
Was someone trying to force King Larthtor and Queen Igahnia, the current
rulers of Fairy, to choose? Was it instead, treason? There was also no denying
that Michael’s name was on the Unicorn’s list. Had destiny already been
changed and the Unicorn’s presence meant to turn it back to its proper course?
Who was behind this and to what purpose? Who was powerful enough to do
this?
And what of Michael’s
curse? Was it still valid now that Michael lived? Perhaps his curse could work
against him. Despite her inner turmoil, Gaylana could not resist a sly smile at
that thought. She could possibly arrange that – Michael and Mendalia. Dare she
upset nature in such a way? Tempting as the thought was, Gaylana shook her head
to erase the thought, at least for now.
She needed time to think
about what she had learned. Her council would never be more important than in
the coming months. She would return to the kingdom and consult nature to see
what it had to say. Michael would return and another war was coming. She would
need to go before the King and offer guidance, and soon. For now, she needed
time to think.
